Rosemary's Baby to be "Born Again"?

According to bloody-disgusting.com the ABC television network in the United States is working on reviving Ira Levin's classic Rosemary's Baby as a four hour miniseries. My first thought was "awesome", but as I thought about it, my enthusiasm faded. Rather than being a straightforward remake of the 1968 movie, the miniseries will apparently focus more on what becomes of Satan's spawn, after the fashion of the nearly forgotten sequel to RB, Whatever Became of Rosemary's Baby. It would be cool if, in the spirit of the original story, ABC lets the Satanists win. But alas, this isn't 1968, which compared to today, seems like a golden age of enlightenment and creativity. I'm afraid they'll try to slant it to cater to the Christians, the folks who've made the "Left Behind" series popular, and so our noble Satanists will not be allowed to win. I mean, come on, is nothing sacred anymore? Sheesh...

USA #1 Again!

It appears that the contemporary American lifestyle might not be the best way to go. Heh, this hardly comes as news to some of you, I know. Not only does the U.S come in at #1 for the highest percentage of obese citizens, not only are we the #1 religious nation of all 1st world countries, and #1 in percentage of incarcerated citizens, but we also take the #1 spot for the most crazy people too. I wonder: will the Second American Revolution be the one where all the intelligent, open-minded, citizens migrate out of America in favor of Europe or Oceania/Asia? Or anywhere where QUALITY of life actually matters? Somewhere with character, where personal growth is possible? Or, should we conclude that 40 minute commutes, Wal-Mart, CVS, fast-food, and televangelist-driven foreign and domestic policy is the best that +/- 7 million years of human evolution can produce? Once you've had your fill of Wal-Mart and bad food, there really is no particular POINT to remaining in America, since there isn't anything else to it anymore. ...where's my passport?

Europe Debuts Heavy Metal Opera

The classic tale of Faust has been made into a heavy metal opera in Norway. Click here for the BBC's coverage. Would be nice to see this come to America, but I doubt it'll make it across the pond.

Death Sentences for "Save the World From Satan" Murderers

Two brothers have been sentenced to death in a California court for murdering five people in their effort to "save the world from Satan." That's right-the brothers killed and dismembered these innocents to save the world from Satan. In what will strike some as perverse timing, as I was reading the article on SFGate.com the John Mellencamp song Pink Houses came on the radio: "Ah, but ain't that America, home of the free..little pink houses for you and me." I turned to Satan, who was sitting at the computer next to me, and aksed, "Hey Satan, could you please change the station? Put on some Misfits or Zeppelin, or perhaps call up that groovy podcast stream from the 9th circle?" "Not a chance", replied the Evil One, grinning sardonically, "I LOVE this song!" ...Who knew?

Yessir, it sure 'nuf is America. Pink houses, purple pills, and a black and blue citizenry.

This week's news is of a Magus of a different sort: the suicide of Dr. Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson. Reportedly, he pulled the trigger while his wife was on the phone, and had been discussing his reasons for his sortie finale with her for the past month or so. Said he wanted to go out while still on top of his game, rather than deteriorate. I can see his point. Another great American writer, Mark Twain, described old age as an "insult", and one has but to think of nursing homes to have Twain's point driven home forcefully. Some societies revere "elders": ours is not one of them.
